Costumed Interpreter

“I began as a Guide in April 2003, and over the years have found it to be a very diverse role. I work as a Costumed Interpreter – it's a role I thoroughly enjoy and get a lot of pleasure from.

“I decided to join because I enjoy working with people, and also because I knew about the Castle already. I had contacts with many of the staff here from my previous job as a ticket agent.

I don't really have a typical day

“When I joined, I expected it to be a fun place to work – and I haven't been disappointed! It's always been a lot of fun. I can't describe a typical day, as every day is different. There are always different challenges to ensure that the guests are looked after as well as possible. If there are ever times when I might feel a little down, I soon brighten up when I arrive at work!

“The best thing about my job is being part of a very good team – the people that I work with are all friendly and happy, and we get on really well with each other. The atmosphere around the whole Castle is incredibly supportive – we have good managers, and we can speak to them about anything. Even our General Manager is very approachable.

Making someone day every day

“I would say this is an ideal profession if you enjoy working with other people, sharing historical information and entertaining others – you will always have a smile on your face! I'm very aware that I can have a big influence on customer experience. By bringing the past to life for our guests with historical background stories and anecdotes, I can help them to get the most from their day!

“By interacting with our guests I can provide them with a magic moment. You have to know the history of the area in which you are based – then you can tell the story! When I am based in the Mill, I tell the story of electricity and relate it to the modern day. When I am based in the Royal Weekend Party, I can share the gossip of the time!

Legends of old and living legends

“I enjoy every day – they're all equally special. That said, one that stands out in my mind is the day I met my hero, the Welsh rugby legend Phil Bennett. When he walked into the Great Hall. I said to him “Mr. Bennett isn't it? Let me give you a guided tour of the Castle!” It's really nice to meet a real live hero!”
